Most times, people will tell you to stop doing something because they think you’re not good enough. They may even discourage you from pursuing goals because of their own perceptions of your abilities. But here’s the question I want you to think about: How will you become good or improve if you quit just because someone said you weren’t ready?
I have personally challenged myself to take on things I once thought I wasn't prepared for, and it’s led to tremendous growth. This shift in mindset, from avoiding things I didn't feel confident in to embracing them as opportunities to learn has made a big difference in my life.
I remember a particular moment in August when I was tasked with being the Master of Ceremony (MC) at a graduation ceremony. Someone asked me, "Michael, have you done this before?" I was honest and said, "No." But I didn’t stop there. I added that, "I will do it, not because I already know how, but because I want to learn."
This experience was both nerve-wracking and empowering, and it taught me that the only way to learn is to do. You can’t wait until you feel fully ready, because that moment might never come. What I’ve come to realize is that the key to growth is stepping into uncomfortable situations with the mindset of a student.
There’s a high possibility of failure when you’re doing something for the first time, and that’s okay. The truth is, failure is part of learning. It humbles you, teaches you where you need improvement, and pushes you to become better. My encouragement to you is this: Always see yourself as a student. Be humble enough to accept that you don't know everything yet, open-minded enough to receive feedback, and courageous enough to try even when you feel unprepared. The goal isn’t to compete with others, but to compete with yourself and become better than you were yesterday.
So, the next time someone tells you that you're not good enough, remind yourself that you’re here to learn and grow. That’s how you’ll truly become better; by doing, failing, improving, and doing it all over again.
Challenge yourself. Step out of your comfort zone. You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve when you refuse to quit.
